Period Tracking Without an App: The Paper Method That Still Works

One date a month, a pen and any calendar is a complete tracking system. Here is what to write down, how to read it back, and where paper genuinely loses.

You can track your whole cycle with a pen and any calendar, and there is only one entry you have to make: the first day your period starts. Circle that date every month and you are holding the same input every tracking app in the world is built on, because a cycle is counted from one start date to the next. Flow, pain, mood, temperature — all optional, all worth adding only if you will keep them up. Paper gives you a record nobody else can reach. It takes away the reminder, the arithmetic and the backup, and this page says so rather than pretending otherwise.

What follows is the whole method: what to write down, how to read it back, what a calendar of circled dates tells you that a single confident prediction cannot, and where paper genuinely loses.

The one date that does all the work

A cycle runs from the first day of one period to the day before the next one starts. That is the definition every number about your cycle is built from, and it means two circled dates give you one cycle length, four give you three, and thirteen give you a year.

Write the start date. If you want a second entry, write the day the bleeding stops, which gives you how long your periods run. That is the minimum that makes a record useful, and it is genuinely all you need.

Two small rules make the numbers trustworthy later. First, decide what counts as day one — most people use the first day of proper bleeding rather than the spotting that sometimes comes before it — and then use that same rule every month. Consistency matters more than which rule you pick, because a record that changes its own definition halfway through cannot be read back. Second, write the year somewhere on the sheet. Three years from now, a page of circled numbers with no year on it is a puzzle.

What else is worth adding, and what to leave out

The temptation with a blank sheet is to build a system with twenty rows, which you will fill in beautifully for eleven days and then abandon. A short list you keep beats a long one you do not.

Pain, flow, sleep, mood and energy will tell you more over three months than any single day tells you now. Write them on the day, not at the end of the month. That is not a preference — it is the reason clinical charting is done the way it is. The International Society for Premenstrual Disorders recommends that a diagnosis is confirmed only after reviewing data recorded across two consecutive cycles, precisely because looking back and remembering has limited value and needs checking against something recorded as it happened. Your memory of last month has been edited by how this month is going. A tick made on a Tuesday has not.

That is also the single most useful thing a paper record does for an appointment. "It has been bad lately" and "here are three months of dated entries" are different conversations, and only one of them gives a clinician something to work with.

Working out your own average, by hand

This is arithmetic anyone can do, and the whole reason apps feel clever is that most people have never been shown it.

Add the three cycle lengths and divide by three for the average. The shortest and the longest are your range. The gap between them is the number that actually tells you how predictable you are, and it is the number no app puts on its front screen.

Three cycles gives you a rough idea, six gives you something you can plan around, twelve tells you what your year looks like. To estimate your next period, add your average to your last start date — and then hold the shortest and longest either side of it, because that is the honest width of the guess.

Read your own numbers against the published bands rather than against a friend's. The NHS says a period comes around every 28 days for most women, and that anywhere from every 21 to every 35 days is common. In the first years after periods begin the band is wider: ACOG reports that 90% of adolescent cycles fall between 21 and 45 days, and that by the third year after the first period, 60 to 80% are 21 to 34 days, as is typical of adults. The NHS calls periods irregular when the gap is under 21 days or over 35, notes this is most likely when periods first start and when nearing the menopause, and suggests speaking to a GP if your periods are irregular or your normal pattern changes.

What circled dates show that a predicted date hides

An app hands you one date in bold. A calendar hands you a shape. The shape is more truthful, and here is the evidence for why.

Across 612,613 tracked cycles, the mean length was 29.3 days and only 13% were the textbook 28. More usefully for you: the mean variation in a single woman's own cycle length was 2.6 days from one month to the next. So a prediction printed as a day is a prediction with a few days of movement quietly folded inside it, and the confident bold date is a design decision rather than a measurement.

On paper you cannot avoid seeing that. Twelve circles across a year sit unevenly, and the unevenness is the information. You can see the two months that ran long after a hard stretch at work, and you can see that they came back. One number cannot show you that; a page of circles shows it at a glance. This is the same argument made at greater length in paper against an app, side by side.

What paper cannot do

Four honest failures, none of which anybody selling printables mentions.

  • It cannot remind you. No notification the evening before, no nudge when you have not logged in nine days. If you forget for two months, the record has a hole in it and nothing tells you.
  • It cannot do the arithmetic. Every average, range and estimate on this page is a sum you have to do yourself, and if you do not do it, the dates are just dates.
  • It loses easily. Paper gets thrown out, soaked, packed in a box during a move. There is exactly one copy, and no undo.
  • It cannot be searched. Finding every month you noted a headache means reading twelve sheets.

Against that, the thing paper does that no software can: it cannot be synced, breached, sold, subpoenaed or inherited by whoever buys the company. That is the same distinction between a promise and an architecture that runs through what actually protects you in a period tracker — and paper is the most extreme version of it, because there is no company at all.

Sheets that are already ruled

You do not need anything special. A wall calendar and a pen is a complete system. But squared paper drawn for the job is easier to keep up with, so the sheets on this site are free, need no email address, and are made by your own browser rather than downloaded from a server.

Print two or three months at a time and put them somewhere you will walk past. A sheet on the fridge gets filled in; a notebook in a drawer does not.

Doing the sums without keeping a record

There is a middle way that some people miss. You can keep the record on paper, where nobody can reach it, and still use a calculator for the arithmetic — because a calculator does not need to keep anything.

Type your last few start dates into the cycle length calculator and it returns your average, your shortest, your longest and how much the whole thing swings. It runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, there is no account, and closing the tab ends it. That is the arithmetic without the record, which is a fair trade if the sums are the only part you wanted a phone for.

Where Athena stands

When it ships, cycle data will be written to a private database on the phone, predictions calculated on the device, with no account and no server copy of anything you log. The app will send anonymous diagnostics — which features get used, crashes, device model, never anything you log — to Firebase, and this website uses IP-anonymised web analytics.

The honest cost of that design is the same one paper has: no automatic backup. If the phone is lost and nothing was exported, the history is gone. It is also worth knowing that on an app built the other way, uninstalling does not usually reach the copy held on a server — that question has its own page here, because the answer surprises people.

Until then, the printables and the calculators above are the working product. They ask for no account and keep nothing, which is the closest a web page can get to a pen.
