Period Myths, Debunked: Fifteen Things That Are Not True
Fifteen things repeated everywhere that the evidence does not support — the 28-day cycle, day-14 ovulation, the fixed second half, the Moon — each with the correction and the study it came from.
Almost everything confidently repeated about periods is either a rounded-off average or a claim nobody ever checked. The cycle is not 28 days, ovulation is not a fixed date, a calendar cannot tell you which phase you are in, and the Moon is not involved. Below are fifteen of them, each with what the evidence actually says and where that evidence came from. Where a correction has a number attached, the number is here with its sample size, because a corrected myth without one is just a different assertion.
None of this is scolding. Most of these are believed by sensible people because they were printed in a diagram in a biology lesson and never revisited.
Myths about the numbers

Everyone ovulates on day 14.When researchers looked at real cycles rather than textbook ones, day 15 was the commonest day at 27%, day 16 next at 21%, and day 14 third at 20%. Even inside a tidy 28-day cycle the observed days spread across ten of them, and the same authors concluded that accurate prediction from calendar input alone is not possible. Day 14 is a modal guess dressed up as a fact. -
A normal cycle is 28 days.Across 612,613 tracked cycles the mean length was 29.3 days and only 13% were exactly 28. The NHS puts the ordinary range at every 21 days to every 35. Twenty-eight is the number on the diagram, not the number in the population. -
The luteal phase runs to a fixed fourteen days.In the same 612,613 cycles the mean luteal phase was 12.4 days, and 18% were under 11. It is the steadier half of the cycle, which is a different claim from being fixed, and the fourteen-day rule that half the internet counts backwards with is wrong for most people by one to three days. -
My own cycle is the same length every time.The same analysis measured how much one woman's own cycle length moved between cycles: a mean of 2.6 days, and plenty move considerably more. Your average is real. Your average is also not a promise about next month.
Myths about timing and signs

Ovulation happens in the middle of the cycle.NICHD gives day 12 to 14 for an average 28-day cycle and then, in the very next sentence, the part nobody repeats: ovulation can occur anywhere between 10 and 21 days after the first day of the cycle. That is a twelve-day span, from an American government health institute, for ordinary cycles. -
A one-sided ache proves I ovulated.Mid-cycle pain on one side of the pelvis has a name — mittelschmerz — and NICHD says it may be a signal of ovulation. May be. It is worth writing down next to the date, and it is not proof of anything on its own. What your own record shows across several months is yours; it is not a rule anyone can hand to somebody else. -
Sperm only survive a few hours, so the timing has to be exact.The NHS says sperm can survive in the fallopian tubes for up to 7 days after sex. ACOG puts the egg's survival at about 24 hours. So the stretch in which pregnancy is possible is set by how long sperm last, not by how long the egg does — which is why it is measured in days rather than hours. -
You cannot get pregnant while you are bleeding.Nothing about bleeding makes pregnancy impossible. The NHS says it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when ovulation happens, that in most women it occurs around 10 to 16 days before the next period, and that sperm survive up to 7 days. Put a short cycle together with a seven-day survival and the arithmetic closes on its own. No stretch of any cycle is a calendar you can rely on for contraception. -
A late period means something has gone wrong.Usually it means ovulation was late, and everything after it followed. The 612,613-cycle analysis found that differences in cycle length were caused predominantly by differences in the follicular phase — the first half, the part that stretches. A few days either way is ordinary; the NHS's everyday range runs from every 21 days to every 35. The NHS gives a threshold rather than a feeling for when it stops being ordinary: see a GP if you have missed your period three times in a row. One late month is not that.
Myths about what a calendar or a chart can see

A calendar can tell me which phase I am in.A group of sports scientists wrote a paper in 2025 asking their own field to stop doing exactly this. Their conclusion: using assumed or estimated cycle phases has little scientific basis and lacks the rigour to produce valid and reliable data, and the calendar method of counting days between one period and the next cannot be relied upon to classify cycle phases. If it is not good enough for a laboratory, it is not good enough for a verdict about your Tuesday. -
A temperature chart tells me ovulation is coming.ACOG says the opposite in as many words: basal body temperature by itself is not a good way to prevent or promote pregnancy, because it shows only when ovulation has already occurred, not when it is going to occur. The rise — a slight 0.5 to 1 °F, in ACOG's numbers — arrives afterwards. A chart is a receipt, not a forecast. -
Periods follow the Moon.A comment in the Journal of Biological Rhythms did the arithmetic: because the lunar phase runs about 29.5 days and the average cycle about 29, one in two women would menstruate around the new or full moon by chance alone. A study following 529 women for six cycles each found no association between cycle onset and lunar phase. Myths about training

You should not exercise while you are bleeding.A meta-analysis across 78 studies found that performance might be trivially reduced during the early follicular phase, with a median pooled effect size of −0.06 and a credible interval that crosses zero. The authors graded the evidence as low quality. "Trivially reduced, possibly, on low-quality evidence" is not a reason to sit out. -
Training should be planned around your cycle phase.The same meta-analysis says the opposite of what the plans claim: because the effect is trivial and the variation between studies large, general guidelines on exercise performance across the cycle cannot be formed, and a personalised approach is recommended instead. The plans sold as cycle-syncing are built on a phase estimate that the 2025 paper above says is not reliable enough to use in research. And the one that costs the most

Fertility awareness apps are recommended by the NHS.They are not. The NHS states plainly that although there are apps and fertility monitoring devices designed to help track fertile days, none is officially recommended by the NHS. It also gives the number that matters: followed imperfectly, fertility awareness is 76% effective, meaning 24 in 100 women get pregnant in a year. ACOG's figure for typical use of these methods is 12 to 24 in 100 in the first year. Fertility awareness taught properly by a trained practitioner is a real method; a date printed by an app is not that method.
What to do instead
The pattern in all fifteen is the same. A real average gets rounded into a rule, the rule gets printed next to a picture of an ovary, and the spread around the average quietly disappears. The fix is not to distrust everything — it is to keep the spread.
Which means: write down the first day of every period, because every honest number about your own cycle is built from that one entry. Read a range rather than a date. Treat your own record as evidence about you and nobody else. And notice that the pages willing to print a single confident day are the ones with something to sell.
