Do Periods Sync With the Moon? And Five Other Things You Will Hear at School

The lunar month is about 29.5 days and the average cycle about 29, so half of everybody bleeds near a full moon by chance. That, and five more corridor stories with the numbers put back in.

No — and the reason is a coincidence rather than a conspiracy. The lunar month runs about 29.5 days and the global average menstrual cycle about 29, and a 2023 comment in the Journal of Biological Rhythms worked out what follows from that: one in two people would bleed around the time of a new or full moon by chance alone. Half. When researchers actually looked — 529 women, six cycles each — they found no association between the start of a cycle and the phase of the moon. So the moon is not steering anything. It is just a clock of almost exactly the same length as yours, and two clocks that nearly match will keep meeting for no reason at all.

This page is for anybody who has heard something about periods said confidently in a corridor and not known whether to believe it. The moon is first because it is the loveliest of them. Five more follow, each with the correction and where it came from.

Why the moon story survives being wrong

Start with the arithmetic, because it explains everything else. Your cycle and the moon's cycle are almost the same length but not quite, so they drift past one another slowly. Sometimes your period lands on a full moon; a few months later it lands nowhere near one; later still it comes back round. That is not synchrony. That is what two slightly mismatched clocks do, forever, and it produces coincidences at a rate you can calculate in advance — about one in two, according to that 2023 comment.

What makes the story stick is that nobody keeps score of the misses. The month your period arrived on the full moon is memorable. The four months it did not are not memorable at all, because there was nothing to notice. So the evidence you personally collect is filtered before you ever get to see it, and the filtered version looks like a pattern.

None of which makes anybody foolish for liking the idea. It is genuinely old — "menstruation", "month" and "moon" share a root — and it is a good story about something you otherwise cannot see. A cycle has no dial on it. Hanging it on the one clock in the sky that everybody can look at is a reasonable thing for people to have done for thousands of years, and it is a reasonable thing to still enjoy, as long as nobody tells you your body is out of step with the sky and then sells you something to fix it. There is one small study that did find something, and the honest account of what it did and did not show — 22 women, intermittent, its own authors naming the sample size as a limitation — is in the moon and your cycle.

Five things you will hear at school

  1. "Everyone's cycle is 28 days. Mine's 31, is that bad?" 612,613 cycles, npj Digital Medicine, 2019 Twenty-eight is the number on the diagram, not the number in the population. In an analysis of 612,613 real cycles the mean length was 29.3 days and only 13% were exactly 28. The same work measured how much one person's own length moves between cycles — a mean of 2.6 days. So 31 is not a deviation from a rule; 28 was never a rule.
  2. "You lose loads of blood. Like, pints." NHS The NHS's figure for a whole period is about 20 to 90ml — roughly 1 to 5 tablespoons. That is the total, across all the days, not a day's worth. It looks like more than it is, partly because it arrives slowly and partly because blood spreads. The NHS also says what the colours mean, which heads off the other half of this rumour: when your period is at its heaviest the blood will be red, and on lighter days it may be pink or brown. Brown is not old, dirty or wrong. It is a light day.
  3. "Don't use tampons, you can die from them." NHS; population surveillance, PLoS One, 2011 Both halves of that are true and the proportions are missing. Toxic shock syndrome is, in the NHS's own words, a rare but life-threatening condition that can happen when using a tampon or a menstrual cup, or from an infected wound. Measured: active surveillance of a whole American metropolitan area found the average annual incidence of menstrual toxic shock syndrome was 0.69 per 100,000, and 1.41 per 100,000 among those aged 13 to 24 — the highest of any group, and still very small. Rates fell sharply after high-absorbency tampons were taken off the market: by 1986 menstrual cases were down to 1 per 100,000 from a 1980 peak of 13.7 among young menstruating women. The NHS's actual instruction is not "don't" — it is wash your hands, follow the instructions, and do not leave a tampon or cup in longer than needed or recommended.   4. "Mine are all over the place, so something's wrong with me." Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity, 2024 Cycles in the early years are irregular by default. Reviewing the research, the authors report that most studies find a regular pattern is established within one to two years after the first period, though some older studies report up to five, and that by the third year 60 to 80% of cycles fall within 21 to 34 days. They add something people find genuinely surprising: regularity on its own does not tell you as much about what the body is doing as everybody assumes.   5. "A tampon can get lost inside you." NHS It cannot. The NHS says so in one sentence: it is not possible for a tampon to get lost inside you, because your vagina holds it firmly in place. A string can be hard to find and a tampon can be uncomfortable to get out, which is a different and much smaller problem. What these five have in common

Look at the shape of them. Every one is a real fact that has been rounded, stretched or had its proportions removed. Tampons genuinely carry a rare risk — the rumour keeps "life-threatening" and drops "0.69 per 100,000". The average cycle really is near 28 — the rumour keeps the number and drops the fact that only 13% of cycles hit it. Periods really do vary in the early years — the rumour keeps "irregular" and drops "by default".

That is worth knowing as a habit rather than as five separate corrections, because next term there will be a sixth one, and it will arrive the same way: something true with the sizes taken off. The question to ask is not "is that true?" but "how big is it, and who counted?" Almost nobody repeating a corridor story can answer the second half.

The only thing that beats a rumour

Your own dates. Not because writing things down is virtuous, but because every one of the numbers above came from somebody keeping records — 529 women for six cycles each, 612,613 cycles, a whole city watched for six years. That is all a record is: enough boring entries that a pattern stops being an impression.

One date a cycle does it. The first day of proper bleeding, on paper or in a note on your phone. The printable period tracker is a sheet for exactly that and stores nothing anywhere.
