The Moon and Your Menstrual Cycle: What the Research Actually Found
Two rhythms of about twenty-nine days, and a very old story about why. Here is what the studies actually found — including the ones that found nothing.
There is no good evidence that the Moon drives your menstrual cycle. The two numbers are close — the lunar month is about 29.5 days and the average cycle about 29 — and that closeness is enough on its own to explain why the idea feels true. When researchers have looked properly at large numbers of real cycles, they have not found the Moon steering them. The most-quoted study that found anything at all followed 22 women, described the effect as intermittent, and its authors named the small sample as a limitation.
That is the answer. What follows is why the idea is so persistent, what each study actually reported, and what the Moon is genuinely good for — because there is a real answer to that too, and it is not nothing.
The coincidence, and why it is enough
A synodic month — new moon to new moon — is about 29.5 days. The global average menstrual cycle is about 29 days. Two rhythms of nearly the same length will keep drifting past each other, and at any given moment a good share of people will happen to be bleeding near a full or new moon.
A 2023 comment in the Journal of Biological Rhythms put a number on that: because the lunar phase runs about 29.5 days and the average cycle about 29, one in two women would experience menstruation around the time of the new or full moon by chance alone. Half. So if you have ever noticed your period landing on a full moon and taken it as a sign, the coin came up heads — which it does about half the time.
It is worth adding that "the" cycle length is itself an average over enormous variation. Across 612,613 tracked cycles the mean was 29.3 days, and only 13% were the textbook 28. There is no single number for a cycle to match the Moon with.
What the studies actually found

Cycles longer than 27 days were intermittently synchronous with the Moon's luminance and gravimetric cycles. Women aged 35 and under showed this for about 23.6% of the recorded time; women over 35, about 9.5%. The authors name the low number of participants as a limitation.

Menstrual timing was better explained by an internal, clock-like mechanism than by the Moon. A weak lunar association appeared, but the alignment differed between the two continents — which is not what a universal mechanism looks like.
Read together, that is a familiar shape in science: one small, careful, genuinely interesting study reporting a partial effect, and larger datasets failing to find it. The small study is not fraudulent or foolish — it is a real piece of work with a real finding, and its own authors were careful about what it showed. It is simply not what a headline turns it into.
Two details from it are worth keeping, because they are usually reported backwards. The synchrony it found was intermittent — cycles drifted into step and out again, rather than locking on. And it appeared more in the younger participants, not less, which is the opposite of the version that circulates.
Why the idea will not go away
Partly the arithmetic above. Partly that it is genuinely old — the words "menstruation" and "month" share a root with "moon", and that etymology gets treated as evidence when it is only evidence about language.
And partly because it is a good story about something otherwise invisible. A cycle has no dial. You cannot see it, and for most of history nobody could measure it. Attaching it to the one clock in the sky that everybody can see is a reasonable thing for people to have done, and it is a reasonable thing to still enjoy.
The point at which it stops being harmless is well marked. It is the point where the metaphor is sold as a mechanism — where somebody is told her cycle is "out of sync" with the Moon and that this means something is wrong with her, or is sold a protocol to fix it. There is nothing to be out of sync with. A cycle that never once lands on a full moon is not misaligned; it is a cycle.
The things worth ignoring
"White moon" and "red moon" cycles. The claim is that bleeding on the new moon means one kind of person and bleeding on the full moon means another. There is no research behind it and no mechanism proposed for it. Given that half of people will bleed near one or the other by chance, the categories are describing the calendar rather than the person.
Anything that tells you to change your behaviour to match the Moon. Eating, training or scheduling by lunar phase has no evidence behind it, and it is a short walk from there to somebody selling you a plan.
Moon-based prediction. Your own cycle length predicts your period, imperfectly. The Moon adds nothing to that prediction, and a tracker that used it would be worse than one that did not.
What the Moon is genuinely good for
Two honest things.
The first is sleep and mood, which is a different question and an open one. Some studies have reported small effects around the full moon; others have found nothing. That is an active area rather than a settled fact, and "we do not know yet" is a more useful thing to carry around than a confident answer in either direction.
The second is a way of drawing time. A cycle is a loop with phases, some visible and some not, and so is a lunar month — dark, filling, full, emptying. Laying one over the other gives you a picture you can read at a glance, in a way a row of dates does not.
